Who We Are
The West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO) is the regional umbrella body representing professional engineering institutions across West Africa. Our mission is to promote regional integration, excellence, and ethical standards in engineering practice. Through collaboration among member institutions, WAFEO seeks to harmonize policies, facilitate knowledge exchange, and elevate the role of engineering in national and regional development. As a catalyst for sustainable progress, WAFEO supports capacity building, professional mobility, and advocacy efforts that align engineering with the broader goals of economic transformation and infrastructure resilience. We are committed to empowering engineers as strategic contributors to policy, innovation, and inclusive growth across West Africa.

"The world we live in today is shaped and sustained by engineering in every aspect. From the cars we drive to the roads we travel, the buildings we live and work in, the sewer systems beneath us, the computers we use, the streetlights that guide us, and even our household appliances like washing machines—all are the results of engineering innovation and expertise. Our region can only move forward if we collectively recognize and prioritize the vital role of engineering in nation-building. It is through collaboration and shared commitment that we can begin to transform the trajectory of our region and emerge as a beacon of infrastructure-driven economic growth and sustainable development. To achieve this, we must take deliberate steps to improve the quality and relevance of engineering education across our universities. There is a pressing need to reform our engineering curriculum to align with modern standards and global best practices. By doing so, we can equip our engineers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take full ownership of our infrastructural development. Equally important is the need to empower young professional engineers, who represent the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and builders. We must create opportunities for mentorship, hands-on training, professional development, and inclusion in major national projects. These young minds bring fresh perspectives and bold ideas that are essential to advancing technology and sustainable development in our region. We must also be intentional about bridging the gender gap in engineering. The underrepresentation of women in this field is a missed opportunity for our region. By encouraging and supporting more women to pursue and thrive in engineering careers, we enrich the profession with diversity, creativity, and broader perspectives. This includes creating inclusive policies, support networks, and scholarship opportunities that help remove barriers and foster equal participation. Sustainable progress depends on empowering our own engineers, men and women, young and experienced, to lead the charge. The future of our region rests not just in policies and plans, but in the hands of those who design, build, and innovate. Together, let us commit to building a stronger, smarter, more inclusive, and more resilient region through the power of engineering."
